देश की ज्यादातर नदियां पश्चिम से पूर्व की ओर बहती हुई बंगाल की खाड़ी में गिरती हैं, लेकिन नर्मदा नदी अपनी धारा के विपरीत पूर्व से पश्चिम की ओर बहती है और अरब सागर में गिरती है। नर्मदा नदी मैकल पर्वत के अमरकंटक शिखर से निकलती है। यह 1312 किमी चलकर खंभात की खाड़ी अरब सागर में मिलती है। वैज्ञानिकों का कहना है कि नदी का ढलान विपरीत दिशा में होने के कारण वह पूर्व से पश्चिम की ओर बहती है।

Scientists say that due to the slope of the river being in the opposite direction, it flows from east to west.
